The CBD market has exploded since its legalization on the federal level and in most states, and it is now available in a variety of products, like sparkling CBD drinks. The widespread presence of CBD and its products is convenient, especially for those looking to benefit from its positive effects.
What is CBD?
One of the two major cannabinoids that are found naturally and hemp, cannabidiol (CBD), is becoming more popular because of the health benefits associated with its usage through research. CBD contains a very limited amount of tetrahydrocannabinol THC, which is the other major cannabinoid that promotes the high associated with cannabis. Because of the small quantity of THC within CBD, the cannabinoid is non-psychoactive and instead provides a calming effect to the body.
How Does it Work?
Within our bodies exists the endocannabinoid system ECS, which contains receptors that cannabinoids like CBD interact with. The two main receptors are the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are located throughout the endocannabinoid system, the central nervous system, and the brain.
For anxiety, the important cannabinoid receptor is CB1. It is responsible for regulating neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which play very important roles in our mental health. Not having enough serotonin can lead to depression and anxiety. Though there are treatments for having low serotonin, anxiety can also be managed with CBD beverages like sparkling CBD water.
CBD and Anxiety
Because of its relaxing effect on the nervous system, CBD is thought to be effective in easing anxiety.
Generalized anxiety disorder, also known as GAD, can present itself at any time and at any age. It has symptoms that are similar to other disorders and other forms of anxiety, and some of the symptoms are trouble with concentration, constant worry, and restlessness.
In 2011, there was a small trial of participants with GAD and those without an anxiety disorder that underwent a simulated public speaking test (SPST). Compared to those who took the placebo, CBD had a significant effect in reducing anxiety and discomfort in the participants who had GAD. In 2019, a similar test was performed to compare three different CBD doses and a placebo in a group of men taking an SPST. Compared to the placebo, those with GAD who had lower doses of CBD performed better.
Though not entirely conclusive, these results do show that small doses of CBD have an effect in helping reduce anxiety in those suffering from GAD.
Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety is not always contributed to a disorder; there are factors and medical issues in our lives that can contribute to both anxiety and depression. CBD can help alleviate both of these mental health conditions by interacting with cannabinoid receptors in the ECS and providing a sense of calm. For those whose anxiety is caused by pain, the same cannabinoid interaction can help alleviate that symptom.
In 2020, research was conducted on a large group of patients who were suffering from many different ailments. These ailments contributed to anxiety and depression in their lives, and when using CBD, the participants reported significant improvements and their anxiety and depression.
PTSD and Phobia
PTSD stands for post-traumatic stress disorder, and it develops in individuals who have experienced shocking and traumatic events and their lives. As they continue throughout their routines, there are triggers that can promote higher levels of anxiety and panic. It is similar to phobias; the presence of a phobia, such as the fear of spiders, can generate anxiety in an individual.
By providing a calming effect to the central nervous system, CBD can help alleviate some of the anxiety associated with PTSD and phobias. There have been studies that have shown CBD can help decrease the severity of PTSD symptoms. Other Studies have paired CBD with THC to create the Entourage effect, which is where two compounds can increase the effects of one another. With THC and CBD, the THC enhances the effects of CBD, while CBD decreases the psychoactive effects of THC. Together, they work to relieve anxiety.
CBD products like CBD water for anxiety are also helpful in reducing sleep problems and disorders that are caused by anxiety.
How to Use CBD
There are many different CBD products available on the market, but the ones that are growing in popularity are CBD drinks like CBD water, which are helpful for reducing both stress and anxiety. There are several different benefits to drinking CBD water; not only does it provide you with a healthy dose of CBD to alleviate your anxiety, but CBD water also helps your body remain hydrated.
