Delta 8: A Quick Guide
Andres Jimenez @
Delta-8 THC is popular among hemp users because of the number of different products available with it.
Delta-8 is a naturally occurring compound in hemp, also known as a cannabinoid. While it can also occur in cannabis plants, it is more commonly extracted from hemp because the plant is legal. It naturally occurs in small amounts and produces a more sedative high.
Within our bodies is the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a network of receptors that signal other cells in the body. Both animals and humans have this system, and these receptors interact with different cannabinoids.
Cannabinoids interact with two primary receptors within the ECS, the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which manage different processes and neurotransmitters within the body. Cannabinoids interact with these receptors and relieve pain and inflammation while also causing uplifted feelings.
When taking products with Delta 8 THC, users have reported that the substance has helped to:
- Calm nausea
- Relieve pain
- Improve appetite
- Boost mental health
However, these are benefits that have been reported by word of mouth. There has been research into the potential health benefits of Delta 8 THC, and researchers have discovered that the substance is effective, though more research is needed.
It is believed that Delta 8 THC has neuroprotective properties. Through research, Delta 8 has been shown to inhibit the release of adenylyl cyclase, as well as regulate both the potassium and calcium channels and the central nervous system. Together, these actions lead to a healthier brain.
Delta 8 has also been shown to increase levels of choline and acetylcholine in the body, which may be beneficial in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. The substance can also promote the formation of new neurons, which improves cognitive functioning.
Delta 8 THC creates a calming effect on the body. Its effects can help relieve stress and provide a sedative effect, which can be beneficial for those who are suffering from different sleep disorders like insomnia, REM sleep disorder, and circadian rhythm disorder.
Chronic Pain Relief
A large amount of research on Delta-8 THC regarding pain relief was conducted with those suffering from chronic pain. Delta-8 has anti-inflammatory properties, and one of the cannabinoid receptors in the ECS it interacts with is CB2, which is the receptor that handles anti-inflammatory responses.
Does Delta-8 Create a High?
Delta-8 THC does give off a small high, yes; it is a form of THC, which is a psychoactive compound. It is less potent than Delta-9 THC, which is illegal on the state and federal levels because of the high it creates; Delta-8 provides a mellow high. Feelings of relaxation are commonly reported with its usage, along with mild feelings of euphoria.
The Legality of Delta-8 THC
A common question regarding Delta-8 THC and its products is whether or not the substance is legal. And the answer is, it depends.
According to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is legal as long as it contains less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC and is cultivated and produced according to federal and state guidelines. This means that any products that have Delta-8 THC are legal as long as they come from hemp that doesn't have more than the required 0.3% Delta-9 THC.
However, there's a catch; Delta-8 doesn't naturally occur in large amounts within hemp plants. It has to be changed synthetically either by converting cannabidiol (CBD) or converting Delta-9 THC into Delta-8, the latter of which is illegal.
On top of all of this, some states have laws that prohibit the sale of products containing Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC. So if you want to know the legality of Delta-8 THC products, look up the laws in your state.
How to Take
Delta-8 THC is available in a variety of different forms, and below are the best Delta-8 products.
Delta-8 vape pens are small and convenient to carry, which is why many Delta-8 users prefer them. Delta-8 pens use a cartridge that is either pre-filled or refillable.
Delta-9 edibles are perhaps the most delicious and discreet Delta-8 product. Edibles come in the form of brownies, gummies, and many other sweets, and they are the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth while also getting a dose of Delta-8.
Prerolls are a Delta-8 disposable and are essentially a joint. They are singularly sold in packages and are ideal for those looking for a single-use Delta-8 product.
When choosing Delta-8 THC products, there are a few things to keep in mind. Though the hemp industry is legal, it is not as thoroughly regulated as other industries. Because of this, when purchasing products, you want to make sure the brands:
- Provide a certificate of analysis (COA) from a third party confirming the ingredients within the product.
- Provides the source of the hemp
- Contains less than 0.3% THC
Brands that provide this information are transparent and trustworthy.
